Oskar Aglert and Patrik Qvist: Is All Too Much

In the exhibition at hangmenProjects, Oskar Aglert presents four new pieces produced in 2018, where facts, fiction and speculative stories of contemporary times mingle through forms of diverse expressions. The materials and techniques are digital as well as analog manifestations, in two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. Donald Trump’s clubhouse Mar-a-Lago, the public responses to Kanye West’s slippers, and Myron Ebell's climate change denial, are examples of phenomena that Aglert examine artistically in the exhibited pieces Black Hole; Too Small; and Selfie #MyronEbell. In the fourth piece, Going Backwards, we see a 3D-modeled and 3D-printed wooden club made of recycled plastic. Could it be that in our ambitions for progress, we are in fact moving backwards?
Patrik Qvist´s ”Till allmän nytta” (For the Common Good) points to a concrete solution to the housing crisis. A small building is shoehorned into a vacant space in the urban fabric and let up at no cost to anyone that might need it. The urban landscape and with its subtle thresholds between private and public are further explored in a project with appropriated advertising posters that have been torn down, repainted and reinstalled in new places. In the project ”Tiger saw light / building for an unhappy girl” the artist attempts to reduce a small building to the manageable size of a loading pallet in a gesture that is both brutal and poetic. ”Chacun Activiste / all bets are off” is a documentation of an interactive project that focused on several hundred participants opinions on current issues such as climate, environment and gender. The version presented here is a ghost of a photo studio, where the technology of 2014 (the project´s first incarnation) seems hopelessly obsolete. Lastly the project that combine overt symbols with everyday objects: The outdoor installation ”In the garden of Eden of Sweden”.
Oskar Aglert (b 1972) is an artist based in Stockholm. His work has been shown in Sweden in venues such as Nordin Gallery, AK28, Modernaa Museet, Botkyrka Konsthall and Linköping konsthall, and internationally in venues such as; ICA, London (UK), Wexner Center for the Arts, OH (US) and Raum no.1, Berne, (CH). He has been rewarded grants from organisations such as The Swedish Arts Grants Committee, and the Nordic Art Center in Dale (NO). Aglert has been commissioned public art projects by White Architects, and The Public Art Agency Sweden, among others.
Patrik Qvist (b. 1968) is a visual artist with a background in land-art, architecture and heavy drugs. His main focus over the past four years has been text based installations in public spaces, employing disposable plastic cups and loading pallets among other materials. Oskar Aglert presenterar fyra nya verk i utställningen på hangmenProjects, producerade under 2018, där fakta, fiktion och spekulativa berättelser om samtiden möts i olika uttrycksformer. Materialen och teknikerna utgörs av såväl digitala som analoga uttryck i tvådimensionella och tredimensionella former. Donald Trumps klubbhus Mar-a-Lago, Kanye Wests för små tofflor och Myron Ebells klimatskepsis utgör exempel på fenomen som Aglert tagit fasta på och bearbetat konstnärligt i verken Black Hole; Too Small; och Selfie #MyronEbell och Going Backwards. I det fjärde verket Going Backwards ser vi en 3D-modellerad och 3D-printad träklubba i återvunnen plast. Kan det vara så att vi i vår strävan framåt, istället är på frammarsch bakåt?
Patrik Qvists verk ”Till allmän nytta” är ett projekt som visar på ett konkret sätt att hantera bostadskrisen . Ett litet hus passas in i en outnyttjad nisch i stadens murverk och blir en enkel bostad som lånas ut gratis till den som behöver. Ett annat verk återkopplar till reklambudskap i det offentliga rummet. En serie affischer modifieras och visas i ljuslådor inne i och utanför utställningen. I verket ”building for an unhappy girl” sågar Qvist sig genom ett litet hus från efterkrigstiden för att till sist låta det stå modell för ett urholkat folkhem. Installationen ”Chacun activiste/ all bets are off” är en dokumentation av en interaktiv fotostudio för miljö- och klimataktivism som senast visades i Bryssel våren 2018. Slutligen visas t en tolkning av hur populismen frodas i våra trädgårdar. Det lyckliga medvetandet är i gungning.
Oskar Aglert (f.1972) är konstnär och baserad i Stockholm. Hans arbete har visats i utställningar i Sverige på tex. Nordin Gallery, AK28, Moderna Museet, Botkyrka konsthall och Linköpings konsthall, och internationellt på tex. ICA, London (UK), Wexner Center for the Arts, OH (US) och Raum no.1 i Schweiz. Han har flertalet gånger erhållit Konstnärsnämndens 2-åriga arbetsstipendium och haft vistelsestipendium på tex. Nordiskt konstcenter i Dale. Han har realiserat offentliga gestaltningar på uppdrag av bla. White Arkitekter och Statens konstråd.
Patrik Qvist är konstnär med en bakgrund i landart och arkitektur. De senaste åren har han främst arbetat med textbaserade installationer i det offentliga rummet.
